Burrs are milling cutters which have a carbide cutting part soldered onto a steel shank. Burrs are used for tasks such as deburring, smoothing workpieces or machining welds.
Burr models
There’s a burr model or shape available for every conceivable operation, including: tree, pointed tree, flame, ball, cylinder, oval, cone, pointed cone, ball nose cone, trapezoid, and more besides. These burr shapes are also referred to by letters of the alphabet. The most common burr models are:
The choice of burr will depend on the part and the type of material to be machined. For hard-to-machine materials or to achieve a longer tool life, burrs are also available in coated designs.
Burr or burring sets
A burr is available in 3, 6 or 8 mm shanks, with 6 mm being the most common size.
Burrs are available separately, but also in a burring set. A special locksmith kit with specific burrs has been put together specially for locksmiths.
Burr tooth forms
The burr tooth form you choose will depend on the material to be machined. The following tooth form characteristics should be considered:
Tooth form 1-ALU burr with special coarse profile for aluminium and plastic
Tooth form 3-FINE burr with fine profile for a smooth surface and universal use
Tooth form 4-DIAMOND burr with diamond profile for fine deburring and finishing of steel, hardened steel, composite and heat-resistant materials (nickel/cobalt)
Tooth form 6-UNI burr with universal tooth profile for the most common materials and machining operations
Tooth form 8-STEEL burr for high removal on steel and cast iron
Tooth form 9-INOX burr for high removal on stainless steel
Tooth form 6-UNI is the most commonly used tooth form for burrs. For specific requirements or higher material removal levels, specialised tooth forms are available in the range of burrs.
